First some questions:

1. Does the machine lock up when you run X?

2. Do you know what video card you're using?

3. What is the output of pciconf -lv, dmesg?

4. What does Xorg -configure produce?

Finally, can you change the driver setting in the xorg.conf.new to vesa
and run X -conf /root/xorg.conf.new and see if it works then?

Good luck!
