The answer is I didn't RTFM carefully enough, and forgot to specify
'nfsd_flags="-e"' and 'mountd_flags="-e"' in my /etc/rc.conf.  It's
working now.

Sorry for the unnecessary thread, but hopefully it'll help someone
else searching for the same info in the future.
