Setting 'hw.snd.default_unit=2' didn't do anything.

The driver(s) 'sound' and 'snd_hda' are compiled into the kernel.

The output of 'mixer' looked good for the device in question, all
HDMI/ATi R600/R700 related devices had two lines of devices while device
number '1' had several, like this:
Mixer vol is currently set to 100:100
Mixer pcm is currently set to 75:75
Mixer speaker is currently set to 75:75
Mixer line is currently set to 75:75
Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0
Mixer mix is currently set to 0:0
Mixer rec is currently set to 75:75
Mixer igain is currently set to 0:0
Recording source: mic

Well, one problem vanished: after rebooting the box and prior to this
extracting the PCI sound card, using sound on the rear plugs is a
sexpected, but there is no sound on the front plugs (while Windows 7
shows on both sources sound).
