Edgar,

If you want to use gnome, you might want to check the following:

http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q1

Check to see that gnome-session is present, type
$ which gnome-session

if you get message not found then, you did not install it?  You might
want to use kde?
