You're using a 40-pin ATA cable. Replace it with an
"80-pin" (every 2nd wire is "shield", still only 40
pins on the connector) cable which is "finer". This
way the drive can be accessed faster than UDMA33.

Looks like this:

% dmesg | grep acd
acd0: DVDR <HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H58N/1.01> at ata1-master UDMA66
