Chris,

Set $PAGER to "less" and then set $LESS to something reasonable in
your shells rc/profile.

E.g On my machine:

LESS="-Xrmj3z-3 -Pm?f%f\:\ .?pb%pb\%\ :?lt%lt. .?e(END)"

All explained in less(1)
