You may want to become familiar with:

options         ATA_STATIC_ID

Long time ago FreeBSD people decided that it's very annoying when you  
plug ata CD or another HDD
and then your ad1 (which is ad4) becomes ad2, and makes your OS un- 
bootable without manual intervention.

Today we have geom labels, but still ATA_STATIC_ID is something I  
really miss on every linux ..
