Or...you can just not do this at all.

> # /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql start

Will create the auth tables, if they don't exist, with the correct ownerships:

mysql_prestart()
{
        if [ ! -d "${mysql_dbdir}/mysql/." ]; then
                mysql_create_auth_tables || return 1
        fi
