You could always try updating; the issue may have been fixed already.

The way to debug it as a software error is to open the source and
find the file and line (line 2248 in a file called "gtype.c" and see
what the assertion is that fails.  I'm in the middle of building
OpenOffice 3, so I don't have the disk space available to look at
older versions.  gtype.c doesn't exist in my tree for version 3.

Going to an OpenOffice support forum might also be appropriate.
