Would it matter that I did the upgrade procedure:
sh freebsd-update.sh -f freebsd-update.conf -r 6.3-RELEASE upgrade
serveral times?

I had problems with system asking for file comparison, which I
described here (and I wanted to have another look at them):

Could this be why I have no GENERIC kernel?
