cat not needed, as grep accepts filenames
and < as in
grep ^ipfilter /etc/defaults/rc.conf
or the above with | $PAGER appended
grep ^ipfilter /etc/defaults/rc.conf >> /etc/rc.conf
grep ^allsc < /etc/defaults/rc.conf | less
