Problem with gio-fam-backend, portupgrade failing...

I'm also having trouble using downloaded packages - but I think that's mostly because of different compiled in options to the defaults further up the dependency chain.
This is the first time I've had a problem with portupgrade where the solution didn't seem reasonably obvious.
