that was it!! thank you so much! 

interesting thing, is that this system was a complete rebuild from the ground 
up, after the 7.2 was introduced into the ports.  i did still have to set the 
variable XORG_UPGRADE=yes, but i didnt bother with any other other upgrading 
hoop-tricks since this system was totally fresh.
