or simply increase the number of apps that can access your sound card simultaneously :
as root (or sudo):
sysctl hw.snd.maxautovchans = [NUMBER_OF_APPS].
I have 8 on mine (Intel HDA) and it works fine.
You can set this in /etc/sysctl.conf so it's reset on startup to your new value.
