Why don't you start with the Documentation on the FreeBSD Website, e.g:
http://www.freebsd.org/docs/books.html

And you might find Comments in the kernel source, too. Just make sure
that /usr/src on your system is populated and go to /usr/src/sys,
which is the location of the kernel source.
