What if we find the userbase is very large and vendors take notice and
decide to support FreeBSD? This could potential save us thousands of
man hours!

100milliseconds OR hours on the phone with vendor support? If the
statistics don't have the desired effect we can always back it out
later and you will always have the choice to not run the stats
client.... I don't see any bad side effects here.
