Use "vidcontrol -i mode" to list modes then set the one you like.
You could also compile the new kernel with

options VESA
options SC_PIXEL_MODE

to use hi-res modes in console,
and probably add

options         SC_NORM_ATTR=(FG_LIGHTGREEN|BG_BLACK)
options         SC_NORM_REV_ATTR=(FG_BLACK|BG_GREEN)

options         SC_KERNEL_CONS_ATTR=(FG_WHITE|BG_BLACK)
options         SC_KERNEL_CONS_REV_ATTR=(FG_BLACK|BG_GREEN)

to have cool green text on black background :)
