For a start show us:

  /bin/ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/browser_plugins

and then

  /bin/ls -lL /usr/X11R6/lib/browser_plugins

Firefox with 1.4 works fine for me, so maybe you just didn't get the 
links right.
