What's an easy way to replace a drive?

Use Disk2 - the live filesystem disk - for that purpose.  If you boot
from it, it puts you into sysinstall just like disk1, but you can
select 'Fixit mode' from the main menu and get a shell prompt while
running entirely of the CD.
