Did you cvsup your ports tree before beginning?

Man, I keep saying it, and keep saying it.  I really really really 
(REALLY) need to set up a wiki covering ports tree "best practices".  Once 
you have it down, it works like clockwork, but there's a huge gap in 
understanding what to do for beginners. :\
