Hyperthreading hurts 5.3?

You are incorrect. There is no SMP option in the 5.3-R i386 GENERIC
config file as distributed.

Other platforms (sparc64 and alpha) do ship with SMP enabled by
default. They're not using HTT, though, so are irrelevant to this
discussion.
