I had this same problem when trying to install extra packages from Disk 
4 of the 5.3 Release.  It also killed the boot sector which contained 
lilo on another drive <sob>.  I largely recovered the boot sector 
<yay!> so now have a working system on which 5.3 is a a late stage of 
install, but that "retrying" thingo is a worry.
