Edit /etc/aliases and add a line like

root:	<username>
where <username> is  a local user you want to redirect root's mail to. 
Then run newaliases to put the change into effect.
Then login as that user and run thunderbird.
You won't have any existing mail, but all the new mail will be sent to that 
address.
