Gnome Ethernet Very Slow

Basically my internet connection is very very slow whe using gnome browsers (or any app).  but its a DSL line, and its as fast as it should be when downlaoding something from teminal???

Free BSD 4.10 i386
Gnome 2.8
Realtek ethernet card

??

Any ideas?
