Start gnome's gdm at once

Another alternative to this would be to edit /etc/ttys with a line like this:

ttyv8 "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"   xterm off secure

Except that you'll need to set the path (xdm's path) to gdm's path.
