If you're interested in the technical details, read:
McKusick, Neville-Neil, "The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD 
Operating System", Addison-Wesley, 2004.
I haven't read yet it but I have the predecessor book (about 4.4BSD) and 
I guess it's written in the same style.
