Seems to be solved! The portupgrade procedure described in the UPDATING file using portupgrade -rf devel/compat2 seems to depend on some other port upgrades (perhaps imake-4.3.1_2 ?). I could compile the X libraries meanwhile by a portupgrade -arR! Thanks to everyone who invested time into this question, Chris
