losing disk space

thanx guys. learn something new every day.
I actually noticed that my smaller volumes display the
same 'discrepancy'..., but it only became a concern after
'loosing' 10gb :). hehe.
should've realized that myself right away.

is this true though that soft updates use additional disk space ??
