samba won't run - here is the error message...

I installed samba from the ports and configured the smb.conf file, this 
is what smbstatus reports -

Failed to open byte range locking database
ERROR: Failed to initialise locking database
Can't initialise locking module - exiting


What is wrong and how do I fix it?
