I know the BCM5704 had a problem with it's mbuf space,
see http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/net/2003-08/0096.html
but this has since been fixed. I'm curious as to which version you have ?

guardian# grep bge /var/run/dmesg.boot
bge0: <Broadcom BCM5702 Gigabit Ethernet, ASIC rev. 0x1002> mem 0xf5fe0000-0xf5feffff irq 28 at device 4.0 on pci0
bge0: Ethernet address: 00:0b:cd:cc:79:d5
miibus0: <MII bus> on bge0
bge1: <Broadcom BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet, ASIC rev. 0x1100> mem 0xf7ff0000-0xf7ffffff irq 22 at device 1.0 on pci5
bge1: Ethernet address: 00:08:02:91:3a:fd
miibus1: <MII bus> on bge1

Mine are all working fine on 5.2.1
