I hope this is a typo:
>ifocnfig_xl0="inet a.b.c.4 netmask 255.255.255.0"

if that is exactly what you've put in your /etc/rc.conf then there's your 
issue.
   ifocnfig  SHOULD BE ifconfig

Gateway YES

Can you paste your full rc.conf?
