jail core dumps

I followed the instructions from the man jail(8) and ended up with mount.core, swapon.core, and umount.core in the / directory. The messages that came up when trying to start up the jail are:

Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Skipping disk checks ...
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Mounting /etc/fstab filesystems failed, startup aborted

This is my first time to try running a jail... any ideas where to look for the problem? It's a 4.8R box.
