Have a look at http://www.nntpcache.org - we used it to replace innd at
a University. It makes a huge difference to bandwidth/diskspace
requirements. I can't comment on the security, though they do seem to
pay attention to it.

Free licensing for most non-commercial environments (as far as I can
tell).
