Freebsd 4.8 & acd1c can't have more than 32 cd devices

I upgraded to 4.8 & since then can't use my cdrw --
When I try to sh MAKEDEV acd1c :  1c bad number
acd1c is invalid -- can't have more than 32 cd devices
