howto upgrade 4.8 to 4.9 without cdrom or floppy? ERROR

My mistake, I meant:

make depend; make; make install

I wrote this one one line/command for simplicity.  When I do this
process, I usually do it in three separate commands, so I know exactly
where it's failing.
