You're right, I didn't explain thoroughly.  The FreeBSD gateway can reach 
the internet.  The cable modem and gateway addresses are assigned by the 
ISP.  My rc.conf:

ifconfig_rl0=DHCP
ifconfig_de0="inet 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0"
gateway_enable="YES"

...
