umass is USB mass storage (a usb hard drive).

The requirements for umass are: scbus and da (scsi bus and scsi direct
access) as the line states in the kernel config file
device umass # Disks/Mass storage - Requires scbus and da

The requirements for a device or option are listed in the config file.
