Why is FreeBSD so SLOW?

The behaviour you're describing definitely isn't normal. Can you check
if your machine is swap thrashing (ie, swapping like crazy)? Have you
tried a different video card? 

The only time I've ever witnessed FreeBSD being abnormally slow has been
in some intensive encryption code. The same code run on an older Redhat
machine ran about 10-15x as fast.

In any event, I would be very suspect of your hardware devices and their
compatibility with FreeBSD. This is the most likely culprit (assuming
you've tested for obvious things, like rampant processes, memory leaks,
etc).
