"upgade" current to stable

I have been traking the current branch for a while on a test machine and
I would like to change to the stable branch.

Can anyone recomned the best procedure to do this?  I have some data
stored on a couple of partitions outside of the the "normal" partitions
that I would like to save without backing it up.  Is this possible?
