KDE_pppd_problem

I have a pretty strange problem involving KDE and pppd. I use kppp to dial to 
the net and it uses pppd for that matter. However whenever pppd becomes 
active it takes about 1min for any application to get started ( windowing 
application. console ones work great). The currently open applications run 
fine and are usuable, but it is virtually impossible to open anything else. 
I use KDE 3.1 on FreeBSD 4.8 RC2. I have 256 RAM so that is strange.
The funny thing is I had the same problem with 4.7 RELEASE
In any other conditions KDE works great no matter what the load is.
That problem only occurs when pppd is started.
Any suggestions please.
