mouse off in X

Hardware is compaq 7470, trident 8400 onboard video, standard ps/2 mouse.
my mouse is about 1/2 inch to the right of all the items. what i mean is i
have to be pointing
1/2 inch to the right of the item i want to click in order to click it. this
sucks and makes
X unuseable. I believe i am running 800x600 resolution and using kde3.1, it
did it in kde3.0 also.

anyone know of a fix?
