Dead keyboards after boot with no keyboard

Take a look at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/serialconsole-setup.html

It goes through setting up a serial console - you should then be able to
login using Hyperterm or other terminal emulator on a laptop, using a null
modem cable.  It works well for me.
