Yes. You may be a little dissappointed when the machine does not
boot up ;)
Better stick with the standard non-smp kernel if you don't want
to chance it.
If you're feeling lucky though, try it rebooting with the smp
kernel. If it doesn't work, then, on reboot do the following:
When you see this prompt:
Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or any other key for command prompt.
Booting [kernel] in 9 seconds...
hit any key, then do:
unload kernel
load kernel.GENERIC // or load kernel.old, depends on your situation
boot -s
