eeprom and ofwdump question....

using the "eeprom -a" and "ofwdump -a" I get the following output ...

> eeprom: could not open /dev/openfirm: No such file or directory
> ofwdump: could not open /dev/openfirm: No such file or directory

What needs to be done to both get the OpenFirmware listed,  and  
(hopefully) me able to write back to OpenFirmware ?

(Besides this a TiBook 400Mhz )
