firefox fails to start with JavaScript error

This is on a new system/install with firefox-66.0.5,1. When I try t run
firefox it fails with this error message:

JavaScript error: jar:file:///usr/local/lib/firefox/omni.ja!/components/XULStore.js

The system does have the omni.ja file installed:

Not being a JavaScript person, I have no idea where to go from here in trying
to diagnose what's wrong.

Any help would be much appreciated.
