How to migrate from ports/emulators/linux_base-c6 to linux_base-c7?

Per ports/UPDATING entry 20141215, I have been using
emulators/linux_base-c6 on my laptop for some time.

I recently noticed that ports/emulators/linux_base-c7 now exists (as of
r421391: 2016-09-05 13:10:30 -0700 (Mon, 05 Sep 2016)).

On the other hand, while I count 76 "linux{,base}-c6*" ports (as
of ports/head @422979), I only see a single "linux{,_base}-c7*" port --
ports/emulators/linux_base-c7 itself.

Scanning through ports/UPDATING, the most recent entry on
emulators/linux* is the above-cited 20141215, and the previous entry
(20141209) is the latest entry to document a process for migrating from
one Linux emulation infrastructure to another. I believe a few of the
particular it cites may well be rather out-of-date.

So I'm wondering:
* At what point might it be ... reasonable ... to consider migrating
  from linux_base-c6 to linux_base-c7?

* Are there any particular steps to take to accomplish such a migration?

Thanks!

Peace,
david
