I didn't figure it out from the man page at least.
Trying the simple solution doesn't work:
root at kg-vm2# freebsd-update fetch
Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 5 mirrors found.
Fetching public key from update2.freebsd.org... done.
Fetching metadata signature for 8.3-RC2 from update2.freebsd.org... done.
Fetching metadata index... done.
Fetching 1 metadata files... done.
Inspecting system... done.
Preparing to download files... done.

No updates needed to update system to 8.3-RC2-p0.

WARNING: FreeBSD 8.3-RC2 HAS PASSED ITS END-OF-LIFE DATE.
Any security issues discovered after Fri May 25 02:00:00 CEST 2012
will not have been corrected.
