pth and pth-hard - difference please

Hi
I want to install jabber which depends upon pth-hard. I have pth 
installed. Could anyone please give me a plain english explaination of 
the implications of changing to pth-hard? I do not understand the 
difference and do not know if it may adversely affect other installed ports.
