redports - should I rename the updated distfile (tarball)?

I can't comment on the relation of this to redports as I've never used
it myself. I can state that if you're modifying the source and creating
a new tarball you should bump the PORTVERSION in the port (and
consequently in your distfile too) and also make sure distinfo is
correct. This will help to distinguish your changed tarball from the
original.
