Usually fixable without bumping portepoch -- just tweak the way
PORTVERSION is generated from DISTVERSION slightly differently.

Compare:

% pkg_version -t 2.3.1 2.3.1.a
>

% pkg_version -t 2.3.1 2.3.1a
<

In this case, setting:

PORTVERSION = DISTVERSION

should be sufficient.
